Sega and Nintendo, the two titans of the then mainstream consoles MegaDrive and NES, strived to give us the most incredible masterpieces in all genres, from fighting games to racing, from sport to adventure.
In our post you’ll find some of the best games released in the nineties. Check it out!
Mortal Kombat II (1993)
We would be nowhere in fighting games if in 1992 we didn’t see the rise of Mortal Kombat. This game was a huge bestseller at the time and remains one of the most popular fighting games in the genre’s history, spawning numerous sequels and spin-offs over the following years and decades.
Mortal Kombat II in particular was a sensation sequel, graphics and playability moved a step ahead. It became popular among kids for its crude portrayal of violence, especially expressed with the Fatality move, the definitive beat to the loser.
Characters were mythical, inspired by the most bizarre creatures of the Outworld.
Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle
Alex lives on the planet Aries, where his brother, King Igul, now reigns. Rumor has it that their father, King Thor, is still alive and that he is on the planet Paperrock. Alex decides to take a direct journey on that strange planet to go looking for him.
The games received mixed reviews in the coming years, but it was a huge success for many followers and it was one of the first videogames released in 16 bit quality.

Sonic The Hedgehog
Sonic was the first videogame I had, so I really have to put it in my list. Sonic was a spinning hedgehog traversing the lands of the world to stop the vicious invasion of Dr. Robotnik. Sonic would spin, jump and run to defy the obstacles and captures the rings and scores extra lives, until the final fight with Dr. Robotnik.
Originally thought exclusively for Sega Systems, the game was ported at the beginning of the new century for Playstation 2 and Xbox.
Super Mario Bros
Mario Bros is a platform game that was born actually in the eighties, but knew an immense popularity in the nineties as well, through the Nintendo platforms NES, SNES and GameBoy.
Probably the most popular platform game of the 90s, it has sold around 923.34 million sales worldwide and it is still a good seller today tweny years later.
